Es liegt was in der Luft! Es rumort, grummelt, die Menschen stehen an der Ecke, rotten sich zusammen und flüstern, sprechen, diskutieren. Da-da-da-daaaa … naturgemäss sind es viele Stimmen und wie immer wild durcheinander, doch ein Teil, ein besonders interessanter, dreht sich um die Dynamik des Webs, seine Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, den Übergang von der Informations- zur Wissensgesellschaft, copyright or wrong, das Bezahlweb, Monetarisierung versus open source, neue Geschäftsmodelle, Freibier oder Freiheit. Der Heidelberger Appell ist nur ein Ausdruck dieses Tastens in die Zukunft.

It feels like, with the economic crunch fully upon us, that the battle between the free internet and the pay internet is reaching a new stage. Traditional content agencies are becoming desperate and declaring “the end of free”. Now this has nothing to do – as James Farmer suggests – with whether people are sufficiently grateful for the charity of the service providers. It has, in my view, everything to do with the sort of economic model we, as a global society, want to pursue – one which favours large, entrenched, and powerful corporate media, or small, agile, independent voices. James Farmer stellt plakativ zwei Artikel und Antipoden vor, es werden die aktuellen Problemfelder der Verlage, der Musikindustrie und der Presselandschaft im allgemeinen beschrieben. Kennen wir schon. Die unterschiedlichen Perspektiven entsprechen den Rückzugsgefechten versus der Suche nach neuen Geschäftsmodellen. Sowieso. Was aber, wenn es am Ende weniger um neue Geschäftsmodelle, sondern grundlegend um unsere Art zu Wirtschaften geht? Und das in verschiedenen Geschwindigkeiten mit höchst uneterschiedlichen Spielregeln in höchst unterschiedlichen Ländern? Oups!

In diese Richtung zielt Seth Godin, der im folgenden TED-Video Leadership und nur-Stämme-werden-überleben-Mentlität aufgreift, mashupt und beschreibt. Die Chinesen werden schon wissen, warum sie uns interessante Zeiten wünschen … Seth Godin:

Knowledge-able

Most university classrooms have gone through a massive transformation in the past ten years. I’m not talking about the numerous initiatives for multiple plasma screens, moveable chairs, round tables, or digital whiteboards. The change is visually more subtle, yet potentially much more transformative. As I recently wrote in a Britannica Online Forum: There is something in the air, and it is nothing less than the digital artifacts of over one billion people and computers networked together collectively producing over 2,000 gigabytes of new information per second.

While most of our classrooms were built under the assumption that information is scarce and hard to find, nearly the entire body of human knowledge now flows through and around these rooms in one form or another, ready to be accessed by laptops, cellphones, and iPods. Classrooms built to re-enforce the top-down authoritative knowledge of the teacher are now enveloped by a cloud of ubiquitous digital information where knowledge is made, not found, and authority is continuously negotiated through discussion and participation.1 This new media environment can be enormously disruptive to our current teaching methods and philosophies. As we increasingly move toward an environment of instant and infinite information, it becomes less important for students to know, memorize, or recall information, and more important for them to be able to find, sort, analyze, share, discuss, critique, and create information. They need to move from being simply knowledgeable to being knowledge-able …”

Smells like teen spirit 

Wer noch nicht so recht weiss, worum es geht, Introducing Edupunk ans Herz gelegt, Mike Caulfield, The Glass Bees, Chronicle (“A group of tech-savvy professors are claiming punk music as inspiration for their approach to teaching. They call their approach Edupunk … seems to be a reaction against the rise of course-managements systems, which offer cookie-cutter tools that can make every course Web site look the same.”) und natürlich Stephen Downes, wir berichteten …

Edunoise 

Ohne das Wort weiter zu strapazieren (wer sich an die Achtziger erinnert, kann nicht dabei gewesen sein): es hat was! Es transportiert eine diffuse Frische und Aufbruchstimmung, smells like teen spirit und lässt die dröge Welt der Pädagogik und des corporate learning mal wieder alt aussehen. Staubtuch, bitte!

Die implizite Kapitalismuskritik, das übliche corporate bashing und die ebenso notwendige, wie unzureichende Verkürzung auf einen Begriff wird in eine rege Debatte münden, wütende Kommentare, kluge Abhandlungen und noch klügere Essays evozieren … und besonne Statements wie das von Dave Warlick: “I do not have any real objection to corporate embrace of these tools. We’re all trying to make a living. What worries me, though, is school officials hearing the buzz, and thinking that they can buy their way into the crowd, rather than learning their way in.”

Ich bin gespannt, wie sich das Meme in den nächsten Tagen, Wochen und Monaten entwickeln wird. Mit seinem impliziten Hunger nach Lernen, dem Anspruch auf open access und der erfrischenden do-it-yourself Attitüde. Über die man zumindest eins sagen kann: sie funktioniert!

GRREAT: The concept of Edupunk has totally caught wind, spreading through the blogosphere like wildfire. This post summarizes several recent posts and offers something like a definition (I would like to think that true edupunks deride definitions as tools of oppression used by defenders of order and conformity): “edupunk is student-centered, resourceful, teacher- or community-created rather than corporate-sourced, and underwritten by a progressive political stance.

Barbara Ganley’s philosophy of teaching and digital expression is an elegant manifestation of edupunk. Nina Simon, with her imaginative ways of applying web 2.0 philosophies to museum exhibit design, offers both low- and high-tech edupunk visions. Edupunk, it seems, takes old-school Progressive educational tactics–hands-on learning that starts with the learner’s interests–and makes them relevant to today’s digital age, sometimes by forgoing digital technologies entirely.”

Brian Lamb, edupunk DJ extrordinaire, offers a distribute3d publishing framework screencast (distributed publishing is very edupunk) and writes “another dirty edupunk is bacvk on the streets.” Jim Groom tells us that BlogHer nailed the definition of edupunk. He also ponders edupunk anthems – to which list I have to offer Alice Cooper’s School’s Out. And he offers examples of edupunk from the annals of murder, madness and mayhem (talk about running with a theme). Dave Warlick also comments.
